Oh, Gisele. You've Done It Again.
Although I think the quiet venting supermodel wife of Patriots QB Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen – who was heard responding to a Giants fan who surrounded her after the Super Bowl loss – was reported on as if it was a loud rant, Bundchen should have known better to keep her mouth shut and walk quietly to the limo.
As communications expert Kevin Whalen of PunditReview wrote to me earlier today:
"This breaks all kinds of PR rules, from someone whom should know better given her position as the world’s top bathing suit wearer. Never speak in anger, after a few drinks, or in a way that puts your husband in an awful position at work with his teammates. Jeez, does she want fans to focus on the fact that they haven’t won a Super Bowl since Brady started dating her?"
According to SI.com, Bundchen said:
“You [have] to catch the ball when you’re supposed to catch the ball. My husband cannot f------ throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”
Here's a link to the actual video. Strain really hard and you may catch what she actually says when surrounded.
We had a get-it-all-out-now pizza lunch and venting session at our Boston headquarters yesterday and, believe me, I have heard the same sentiments from many Pats fans here. So Gisele wasn't far off in her defense of her husband. But, at the same time, she could have tried not to cause him additional grief by piling on top of the media flurry she caused last week when an email she supposedly sent to friends asking them to "pray for Tom" leaked out.
I applaud her caring for her husband and, frankly, her defense of him after the game. But I also recommend that she sit in on the next PR 101 training by the Belichick camp. I'm sure they recommend something very similar to the standard response from Sgt. Schulz, the Prisoner of War camp guard on "Hogan's Heroes" : "I know nothing, nothing!"
